About Us:
Welcome to Sib Land! Our names are Rachel (22) and Sarabeth (15) and our sisters have disabilities. We have started Sib Land as an offer of support for anyone in this type of situation who needs someone to talk to who understands where they are coming from. We have been there and know what a difference it makes to have a support system. This is not just limited to siblings. Rachel's sister Kelsie (20) has Epilepsy, Asperger's Syndrome, and Obsessive Compulsive disorder. Sarabeth's sister Stephanie (20) has Down's Syndrome. They met at school and have brought us all together. Kelsie and Stephanie cheer together which is where Sarabeth and Rachel met and became friends. We have grown into one set of sisters bonding over all aspects of our lives, including music. Through Kelsie and Steph's school we gained a 5th sister, Shelby. Shelby (19) dedicates her time outside of school to sharing her story of growing up with cerebral palsy and the importance of living your life positively no matter what hand you're dealt. Last year Rachel and Sarabeth were also asked to present at SPARC 2007 and share their experiences of growing up with disabled siblings. It was a turning point. Since then we have presented at the national summit, Family Cafe, and have signed on to present at various disability conferences around the state. Stop by and see us some time. We promise to make you laugh and maybe even cry. We truly believe that our experiences (good and bad) have made us better people. We wouldn't have been able to do it without the unwavering love and support from our mothers and family. If you would like more information or would like to share your experiences...we welcome it! You can reach us here of course or through our email at SibLand5@yahoo.com.
What we think Sib Land could be about? 4 things come to mind for us.
1) The obvious-the siblings of children with special needs getting to know each other, share experiences and help each other along the way.
2) For the non-disabled siblings and THEIR siblings to get to know each other better and in a new way.
3) For family and friends to join in for the fun and sharing of experiences. Also, to give them the chance to maybe understand the situation better. We don't mean this in a negative way. The concept of "not knowing someone until you walk in their shoes" in common in most situations in life. This is a hard life to understand if you've never LIVED with it. That is something we come face to face with a lot.
4) The other thought we've had is to have this as a networking tool. We have other organizations that we are beginning to work with. This gives all of us an outlet to each other to help spread the word even more that THERE ARE people out their who are going through the same circumstances.
Thanks for stopping by! We hope that you will drop by often!
